STORM Series Blowers
Series Overview
The Plastec Storm Series consists of high static pressure centrifugal blowers constructed from polypropylene. These blowers are designed for ventilation applications where corrosion and chemical resistance are required. They are suitable for moving air in ducted systems, as indicated by their performance certification for installation type D – Ducted inlet, Ducted outlet. A key benefit is their material composition, polypropylene, which makes them corrosive and chemical resistant. The series is commonly used across a variety of industries and applications, including chemical processing and storage, electric vehicle manufacturing & storage, water treatment & sewage, pharmaceutical and medical, oil, petroleum & gas, hemp production, coastal regions, maritime transport & marine applications, and agricultural & food processing.

Performance and Dimensions
Performance ratings are given in terms of Air Flow (cfm) and Static Pressure (in. Wg). The sources provide performance curves illustrating the relationship between static pressure and airflow at different RPMs for each model size. These curves show performance at standard RPMs like 1725 and 3450, as well as intermediate RPMs achieved through frequency variation. The certified performance is for Installation Type D, meaning Ducted Inlet and Ducted Outlet. Performance ratings do not include the effects of appurtenances (accessories).
Dimensions for the Storm Series blowers are provided in both millimeters and inches. Key dimensions include:
- ØA (OD): Outside Diameter of the Inlet flange
- C, D, G, H, I, J: Other specific dimensions of the blower housing and base
- ØF (OD): Outside Diameter of the Outlet flange
- K (Max Height): Maximum height, which varies based on motor size (HP)
Refer to the specific model's data sheet for precise dimensions and performance curves. Acoustic data, including sound power levels (Lw) and sound pressure levels (Lp(A)), is available for some models like the Storm 14 and Storm 18 at specific operating points.
Installation and Wiring
Before installing, using, or operating this equipment, the Installation, Operation & Maintenance Manual must be fully read and understood. These instructions supplement general practices for Plastec fans and blowers, with detailed instructions presented separately. Users and installers should also read the "RECOMMENDED SAFETY PRACTICES FOR AIR MOVING DEVICES" published by the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA).
Typical installation configurations include mounting the blower to a support stand or installing it as part of a roof top ventilation system. The manual provides illustrations for these setups. When mounting the fan to a weather hood, the motor feet should point vertically upwards for attachment to the underside of the hood top, ensuring the fan discharge is correctly oriented. Any new assembly parts or mounting hardware sourced must be 316 Stainless Steel.
Electrical wiring should only be performed by qualified electrical maintenance personnel familiar with the equipment and associated hazards. Failure to observe this precaution could result in property damage and/or serious bodily injury, including death. General electrical precautions must be followed. Specific wiring diagrams may be provided. The model numbers indicate the electrical phase (Single Phase or Three Phase) and voltage options (e.g., 115/208-230V, 208-230/460V, 575V).
Certifications and Compliance
Plastec Storm Series blowers have various certifications and comply with certain standards. Specific certifications listed include:
- NEC 500: CLASS I DIV II GROUP A, B, T4
- NEC 505: CLASS I ZONE II AEx d GROUP IIC T4
- ATEX: Ex II 3G Ex c GROUP IIC T4
A Declaration EU of Conformity ATEX is available. The products are stated to be in conformity with Council Directives 2014/34/EU (ATEX) and 2011/65/EU (RoHS). The product design, manufacturing, and control are managed within a quality assurance system certified to ISO 9002.
Performance certification is based on test performance procedures for PLASTEC and STORM Series and is certified for installation type D – Ducted inlet, Ducted outlet. The rating methods used are designated as Rating Methods D. The manual also recommends reading safety practices from the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA).
Discharge Configurations
Plastec centrifugal fans, including the Storm Series, offer various discharge configurations. The standard configuration is Counter-Clockwise Up Blast (CCW 360).
Optional field adjustable positions are available for counter-clockwise rotation at various angles:
- CCW 45 (Top Angular Up Blast)
- CCW 90 (Top Horizontal)
- CCW 135 (Top Angular Down Blast)
- CCW 180 (Down Blast)
- CCW 225 (Bottom Angular Down Blast)
- CCW 270 (Bottom Horizontal)
- CCW 315 (Bottom Angular Up Blast)
These options allow for flexible installation and airflow direction to suit specific system requirements.
Compatible Applications
The Storm Series blowers, due to their polypropylene construction and resulting corrosion and chemical resistance, are well-suited for handling corrosive fumes and aggressive environments. Common applications include:
- Ventilation in chemical processing and storage facilities.
- Exhausting fumes from electric vehicle manufacturing & storage.
- Ventilation for water treatment & sewage systems.
- Air movement in pharmaceutical and medical settings.
- Ventilation in oil, petroleum & gas operations.
- Air handling in hemp production facilities.
- Applications in coastal regions and maritime transport & marine applications where saltwater corrosion is a concern.
- Ventilation for agricultural & food processing.
While the sources do not explicitly link specific model sizes (Storm 10, 12, etc.) to particular applications, the range of airflow and static pressure capabilities across the series allows for selection based on the volume and pressure requirements of the specific ventilation task. For example, smaller models like the Storm 10 might be used for less demanding applications, while larger models like the Storm 18 are capable of handling much higher airflow and static pressure for more extensive systems.
